Abstract

This study investigates the significance of multicultural education and intercultural dialogue in cultivating intercultural competence to tackle global challenges. The aim of this research is to analyse how multicultural education—anchored in principles of social justice, inclusivity, and appreciation of diversity—can enhance students' abilities to communicate and collaborate across cultural divides. The study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology, utilising document analysis from reports by UNESCO, the World Bank, and the Indonesian Ministry of Education, alongside empirical studies conducted between 2018 and 2023. The analysis centres on models of multicultural education (integration, transformation, and critical models) and their implications for the development of intercultural dialogue and competence.

Findings reveal that schools implementing multicultural and inclusive curricula demonstrate an improvement of 30–40% in students' intercultural communication and empathy levels. Moreover, programmes that incorporate cultural dialogue—such as project-based learning and exchange activities—foster tolerance, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including limited teacher training, inadequate resources, and cultural resistance within local communities.

The study concludes that multicultural education, when bolstered by dialogic approaches, can function as a strategic framework for developing globally competent citizens. It recommends the integration of multicultural content into the curriculum, ongoing professional development for teachers, and active community involvement to enhance intercultural awareness and cooperation in the context of globalisation.
